Summer is in full swing, and while the heat outside might be unavoidable, rising energy bills and uncomfortable workplaces don’t have to be. Now is the perfect time to pause, assess and make a few strategic adjustments. A mid-summer check-in can uncover small problems before they escalate and help set the stage for a productive second half of the year for your business. Here are five key questions to guide your review:

Are you experiencing unexpectedly high energy bills?

If your utility costs are climbing faster than the temperature, it’s time to investigate. Wasted energy use can sneak up on you — from lights left on too long to equipment draining power in the background when not in use.

Take a quick walk through your workspace after hours. What’s still running that doesn’t need to be? Consider installing motion sensors for lights, unplugging unused electronics and installing smart thermostats to reduce cooling demand outside of peak business hours. Even small changes can lead to noticeable savings. For a deeper look, schedule a professional energy audit to identify the biggest drains on your system and prioritize upgrades.

Is your cooling system performing like it should?

Your HVAC system works overtime during the summer months, making it crucial to ensure it operates efficiently. If it hasn’t been serviced recently, a quick maintenance visit can go a long way. A tune-up will help spot any problems and ensure your system runs efficiently. Dirty filters, clogged drains, low refrigerant levels and blocked vents all decrease performance.

If your system is older or needs repairs, consider upgrading to an air-source heat pump. Electric heat pumps offer reliable year-round cooling and heating, operate more quietly than conventional HVAC systems and produce no onsite emissions, making them a wise investment for both cost savings and indoor air quality.

Is your team comfortable?

If your staff is frequently adjusting thermostats or appears visibly uncomfortable, it’s a signal that something’s off. Excessively warm settings can lead to lethargy, increasing discomfort and mental fatigue, which results in decreased focus and lower productivity.

Be aware of hot spots in the workspace. Are workstations situated near heat-producing equipment like printers or servers? If so, think about relocating workstations away from those sources. You can also adopt flexible dress codes during the summer months and add fans to problem areas to help employees stay cool.

Are you losing cool air without realizing it?

Even the best HVAC system can’t keep up if cool air leaks out. Check windows and doors for drafts or gaps and seal them with caulk or weatherstripping. Also, take a look at your ductwork. If it runs through unconditioned spaces, like attics or utility rooms, unsealed or poorly insulated ducts might be sending cool air into areas you don’t even use. Proper sealing and insulation can boost overall system performance and keep your energy dollars from drifting away.

Are you letting in unwanted heat?

Windows are often the biggest culprits in unwanted heat gain. South and west-facing windows can transform your space into a sauna during afternoon hours. Window coverings like blinds, curtains or solar shades are simple tools that can block this unwanted heat gain. Even reflective window films can lower indoor temperatures.

A mid-summer check-in doesn’t require a complete overhaul. A few smart adjustments can improve comfort, reduce waste and help you rein in costs. More importantly, it sets your business up to finish the summer strong, with less stress and more control.
